Get to know Portugal’s hidden gem, the region of Alentejo. The agricultural heart of the country and home to forests of cork trees, wineries and dotted with castles and forts which have protected its border for centuries.

 

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Lisbon

Upon arriving in Lisbon, you will be met and taken to your hotel in the Alentejo. The rest of the day is yours to relax or explore at your leisure.

Day 2: Elvas

Today you will explore the colourful history of Portugal on your full-day tour of Évora and the Megaliths of the Cromeleque dos Almendres. Following a pick up from your Lisbon hotel, you will travel to Évora, the historic capital of the Alentejo. Enjoy time exploring this UNESCO city, seeing sights from Roman times through to the Renaissance.

You will also visit the Temple of Diana, thought to date back to the 1st century AD. Continue onto the Renaissance Church of St. Francis to see the Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos). Here you will marvel at the walls covered in human skulls and bones before wandering around Évora Cathedral and climbing its roof to admire the golden plains surrounding the city. You will then depart Évora for the Roman Villa of Tourega which is well away from the usual tourist haunts.

Continue to the Anta Grande do Zambujeiro, the largest and most important megalith dolmen (tomb) on the Iberian Peninsula. Along the way, you will also check out the smaller dolmen of the Anta da Touriga.

Your day ends with a tour of the Almendres Cromlech, a megalithic complex older than Stonehenge. Take time to marvel at this circle of stones, mysteriously aligned with the sun and stars.

Day 3: Elvas

Today enjoy a unique and highly bespoke experience where you create your own wine and become a winemaker for a day. In Estremoz in the heart of the beautiful Alentejo is where you will enjoy your wine adventures. You will learn all about different grape varieties and then be able to make your own blend.

This is then followed by a premium wine tasting for your enjoyment accompanied with regional cheeses, delicious Alentejo bread and the fragrant local olive oil. You will then be able to take home a bottle of your very own personal blend of wine.

Day 4: Elvas

Today, enjoy the day at your leisure. Either relax by the pool or spend your time exploring the nearby Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça.

Day 5: Depart Lisbon

Leaving your hotel in the Alentejo you will be transferred to Lisbon airport for your return flight home.

Day 1: Arrive Lisbon

Day 2: Elvas
