Meet Channy Chhoeun: Painting Cambodia’s Story Through Art
Channy’s journey from the Cambodian jungle to the art galleries of Siem Reap is a story of resilience and passion. Once drawing with sticks in the dirt, he now shares powerful works inspired by Khmer culture and his own life—offering travellers a deeply human window into Cambodia’s creative spirit.
DRAWING DREAMS IN THE JUNGLE
In 1998, Channy’s family moved to a jungle area 100 kilometres from Battambang as part of a government land grant for farming. Life was harsh—sheltering under trees and surviving on minimal resources. But in the midst of hardship, Channy found comfort in drawing.
With a stick in hand and dirt as his canvas, Channy sketched scenes from his imagination. His teachers praised his talent, but it was his father who saw his true potential. In 2006, he enrolled at Phare Ponleu Selpak in Battambang, where he trained until graduating in 2013.
ART AS A VOICE FOR NATURE AND IDENTITY
Now living in Siem Reap, Channy welcomes visitors into his home art studio and gallery—a quiet, soulful space where every painting tells a story. Passionate about birds and their connection to humans and the environment, Channy uses his art to raise awareness of wildlife protection in a rapidly changing world.
His work blends personal memory, social message, and cultural symbolism, offering a uniquely Khmer perspective on modern challenges.
